Students against budget decrease
Students held protest regarding the administration’s urge of cutting off the budget for state universities and colleges.
In the President Noynoy Aquino’s business visit and engagement in the Ayala Technohub, UP students walked out their classes to prevent Aquino’s convoy from entering the Technohub.
Knowing that UP has tuition hikes and tie-ups with private corporations such as the UP-Ayala Technohub, the administration sees it as a reason why they will be decreasing its budget.
Moreover, students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines dropped their classes for a while to protest against the budget cuts.
Aquino stated in his 2011 budget message to Congress that “We allocated P23.4 billion to 112 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in 2011. This is 1.7 percent lower than the P23.8 billion budget for 2010.”
The reason behind the budget cut off according to the President is that it will push SUCs toward becoming self-sufficient and financially independent, given their ability to raise their income.
