12 senators vote to continue Villar probe

Posted by phunkee On May - 21 - 20091 COMMENT

Twelve senators, including Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, voted to proceed with the investigation of the ethics complaint against Senator Manny Villar over an alleged anomalous road project.

Those who voted, aside from Enrile, were the complainant, Senator Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal, Senators Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Rodolfo Biazon, Panfilo “Ping” Lacson , Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, Gregorio Honasan, Edgardo Angara, Richard Gordon, Loren Legarda, and Manuel “Mar” Roxas.

Only three senators – Lacson, Madrigal, and Aquino – did not explain their “yes” votes.

Most of the senators, who explained their votes, were one in saying that their decision to proceed with the investigation of the case was only to give Villar a chance to answer the allegations against him, and not to find him guilty.

Isabela town mayor critical in ambush

The town mayor of Maconacon in Isabela province is in critical condition after a lone gunman shot him at close range in Tuguegarao City Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Francisco Talosig was on board his Hyundai van (SFA 795) when he was shot at the right neck by a still unidentified assasin at around 1:45 p.m. in the village of Caritan Centro.

Talosig was immediately rushed to the St. Paul’s Hospital for treatment and remained in the intensive care unit as of this posting.

Initial investigation revealed that the victim was with a police escort and two village officials when he was shot using a caliber .45 pistol.

Scientists are returning next week to La Gloria, a pig-farming village in the Veracruz mountains where Mexico’s earliest confirmed case of swine flu was identified. They hope to learn where the epidemic began by taking fresh blood samples from villagers and pigs, and looking for antibodies that could suggest exposure to previous swine flu infections.

Some experts say it’s pointless to worry about what happened in La Gloria now that the swine flu virus has spread around the world. But others argue that a thorough investigation could be key to preventing future epidemics.
